Ways to Support the Campaign
8 Ways to Support the Campaign
Thank you so much for your continued support! We have experienced a terrific response from our supporters in recent weeks. Your work has shown everyone that this campaign is gaining momentum, and it really energizes us here at headquarters to see your support all over the web. In case you haven’t heard the exciting news, we just reached 20% of the vote in a poll released today!
We couldn’t have done it without your help, and we’re extremely grateful. But we need to ask just a little more of you- Election Day is almost here, so we need to amplify our efforts in the next couple of weeks to make that final leap to the front of the polls! If you’ve been waiting for the right time to jump in and help us out- this is it! With less than two weeks to go, now is the time to get involved in the effort to elect the first independent governor of New Jersey!
We’ve identified 8 important ways you can support our campaign. Check them out below!
1. Set up a Google Alert to find articles about Chris online,
2. Write a letters to the editor of your local newspaper
3. Tell us about local events we should visit
4. Spread the message through Twitter and Facebook
5. Talk to 5 people every day about the campaign
6. Blog about the election and Chris Daggett
7. Send this page to everyone you know
8. Be Creative!
Set up a Google Alert to find articles about Chris Daggett online.<
As we draw closer to Election Day, our campaign is drawing more and more press. This is great news, and we can build on that success by posting positive comments about Chris Daggett all over the web. We also need to combat the negative comments our opponents have been posting.
There’s an easy way to stay up-to-date on all of the articles that are being posted on the internet. It’s called a Google Alert. Here’s how to set it up:
1. Go to http://news.google.com
2. Perform a search for “Chris Daggett”
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says “Create an email alert for Chris Daggett”
4. Enter your email address and choose your preferences.
Now you’ll receive automatic email updates about all of the campaign-related news articles that get posted. We’d love to see dozens of positive comments from our supporters all over these articles. We’d also love to see reasoned, respectful responses to negative comments.
Here are two common types of negative comments that we’d love to see debunked:
1. “Daggett can never win- a vote for him is wasted.” The truth is, if everyone who told us that they thought Chris was the best candidate would just vote for him instead of worrying about it, we’d win by a landslide. We believe that the only wasted vote is one that you don’t believe in.
Visit http://notawastedvote.com/ for more arguments against this unfair claim.
2. “Daggett is just being paid by Corzine to steal votes from Chris Christie.”
You all know that this is completely absurd. It’s probably not possible to have any reasonable discussions with people who believe this, but we need to make sure that every time someone posts this lie, we set the record straight. In fact, since we’re receiving matching funds, all of our contributions are public. Anyone can visit http://www.elec.state.nj.us/ELECReport/contribStandardSearch.aspx and see for themselves that we are only funded by our supporters, who
think it’s time for real change in Trenton.
Remember that when we engage the negative comments, we still need to do it in a respectful and honest
way. Let’s not resort to their tactics!
Letters to the editor
As we said, as we get closer to Election Day, more and more attention will be devoted to the campaign. Newspapers across New Jersey will be printing a lot of news about the campaign, and private citizens will be reading as they decide who to vote for. Please consider writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper explaining why you are endorsing Chris Daggett. You can find a list of newspapers in New Jersey below. (Many thanks to supporter Eric Hafner for compiling the list.)
Tips for writing letters to
the editor:
- Keep your letter brief. Read any information the paper publishes about their guidelines and requirements. Following those requirements and keeping the letter brief will increase your chances of being published.
- Be bold! Try to avoid phrases like “I think that,” or “In my opinion.” Readers already know that you’re writing in your opinion, so those wasted words just water down your message. “Chris Daggett is the best candidate for governor” sends a much stronger, more confident message than, “In my opinion, Chris Daggett is the best candidate for governor.”
- As always with our campaign, keep it positive!

Tell us about Local Events we should visit
Chris has been traveling all across the state for months to spread the message about his campaign, but we need to hear from you to figure out the best ways to meet voters. We’re planning a big tour of the whole state on the last four days up to and including the election. That’s 10/31 - 11/3, and we’re looking for local events to visit. Does your town have a big Halloween parade? A fall crafts fair? A lively farmer’s market? Let us know about it! Please email hq@daggettforgovernor.com with
your suggestions.
Twitter and Facebook
One of the best ways to make noise about something on the Internet is through social networking media like Facebook and Twitter. Update your Twitter and Facebook status often with positive comments about your support for Chris. Post
pictures of yourself wearing your Daggett t-shirt on Facebook. Share links, videos, and articles about Chris with friends and family. And remember, we’re trying to get 5,000+ followers on both Facebook and Twitter- so recommend our Twitter, Facebook, and Facebook Fan pages to your friends. We know we have wonderful, creative, and web-savvy supporters. If you have a creative idea for promoting the campaign on the web, send us a note about it, and we’ll post it here for others to read!
Talk to 5 people every dayabout the Daggett campaign
We want to have a large presence on the Internet, but talking to friends and family face-to-face is still a great way to spread the word about the kind of change the Daggett-Esposito campaign can bring to Trenton. Try to talk to 5 people every day about the campaign. This can be anyone from your closest friends and family, to the cashier who bags your groceries at the supermarket. We know this can be difficult and uncomfortable for a lot of people, so we’ve come up with some tips about how to broach the subject.
Tips for talking to people about the campaign:
- Keep the conversation casual. Don’t start out with a strong statement- that will automatically turn people off, even if they might be inclined to agree with your arguments.
- Test the waters first. Start by asking if the person has been following the campaign. If they express dissatisfaction with the state of politics and negative campaigns, that might be a good opportunity to say, “Well have you heard of Chris Daggett? He’s an independent candidate who has run a positive campaign and provided specific plans. That’s who I’m going to vote for.”
- You might ask what the big issues are. Most voters are concerned about their high property taxes. Chris Daggett is the only candidate who has proposed a detailed, viable plan to reduce property taxes by 25%. Neither
of the other candidates have addressed the issue that matters most to the voters of New Jersey. 46% of New Jersey voters are unaffiliated with either major political party. They’re not likely to vote for someone just because they’re a Democrat or a Republican, but they are likely to vote for someone who is addressing the issues that matter to them. - Ask if they are satisfied with the political parties. Even if the person you’re speaking with expresses support for Corzine or Christie, you might say, “You know, I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the
two parties. It doesn’t matter which one is in power, nothing ever gets solved.” - Mention the Star Ledger endorsement. (In fact, read it for yourself if you haven’t yet- it might give you some great ideas about talking to people about the campaign.) It was the first time in the Star Ledger’s history
that they endorsed an independent candidate. They’re willing to break tradition because they know this campaign is so important.
Blog about the Daggett Campaign
Blogs are another great way to get our message out. The more support we can show for Chris in the blogosphere, the more attention we can drive to our campaign both on the web and in the traditional media. So please, take a few minutes to write a blog post about why you are supporting the Daggett campaign. These can be a few sentences or a few paragraphs long- it’s completely up to you. You can send these directly to David Polinchock at dpolinchock@daggettforgovernor.com. If you
have your own blog or website, email David the appropriate link and he’ll get the message out there with posts on our website, Facebook, and Twitter. If you’d like to display a DaggettforGovernor logo on your website, just email us and we will send you the code.
Check out IndependentVoicesNJ.com/video-voters to see all of the user-generated content we receive from our supporters.
Forward to contact lists
Here’s an easy one: send this page everyone on your email contact list. If you’re feeling a little less adventurous about sending political messages to family so close to Thanksgiving dinner, at least identify two or three people who you think might be inclined to support Chris. The more people we get involved in the movement, the faster our support will grow!
Be Creative
Our supporter Lisa Olszowy demonstrated her creativity by fashioning a coat for her dog Daisy from her Daggett lawn sign. Now she spreads the message of independence every time she takes Daisy for a walk!
Send us your creative ideas, and we’ll post them here for other supporters to draw inspiration from!
Thank you
Remember- always stay positive. We want to be known as the positive campaign. We don’t need more
negativity in our political system. Don’t tear the other candidates down, but raise Chris up and show others that he is worthy of their vote.
Thank you again for all your continued support. You’ve brought us this far- now we just need to keep the momentum going for a few more days.
As always, if you need anything else from us, just let us know.
