The Star Ledger ENDORSES Daggett

PISCATAWAY— Chris Daggett, independent candidate for governor, today received the endorsement of The Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest and most influential newspaper, the first time in the paper’s long history it has endorsed an independent for the state’s top elected position.

In an editorial headlined: ‘’Change we can believe in: Daggett for Governor,’’ the paper wrote “New Jersey needs radical change in Trenton and neither of the major political parties is likely to provide it. Daggett’s election would send shock waves through New Jersey’s ossified political system and, we believe, provide a start in a new direction,’’ the paper said.

The paper argued the two political parties have demonstrated that nothing will cause them to change their ways expect repudiation at the polls. ‘’The election of Chris Daggett would deliver that repudiation and put a highly qualified occupant in the corner office of the Statehouse,’’ the paper said. “We believe Daggett is best.’’

The Star Ledger
“The Star-Ledger today endorses independent candidate Chris Daggett and recommends his election as the next governor of New Jersey.

The newspaper’s decision is less a rejection of Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican Chris Christie than a repudiation of the parties they represent, both of which have forfeited any claim to the trust and confidence of the people of New Jersey. They share responsibility for the state’s current plight.

Only by breaking the hold of the Democratic and Republican mandarins on the governor’s office and putting a rein on their power will the state have any hope for the kind of change needed to halt its downward economic, political and ethical spiral.”

  1. Had to chuckle at your Train Station campaign. There are no train stations in all of Ocean County but every member of every household owns a car, often an SUV. We are the neglected part of the State and the consequences of our being left out are staggering. Our kids have sports stadiums lit up like professional baseball but no one ever even talks about higher education as a goal for those kids who remain undereducated and locked into a life of struggle in this State. There are no high tech jobs here in good part because there are very few well educated folks to staff that sort of company.

So maybe change the Train Station campaign and include Bus stations - though we don’t have many of those either. Disenfranchised doesn’t even cover it and more and more taxpayers are leaving so that they can have a few dollars of their own to spend as they see fit.

Sincerely hope you win and suggest you pay some attention to the Southern half of NJ that barely understands you.

  2. You have a typo on this page. Where it says “The paper argued the two political parties have demonstrated that nothing will cause them to change their ways expect repudiation at the polls.”…it should say “except”—not “expect.” I’m a teacher and I notice these things. Good luck!
